Gore is the service centre for some of New Zealand's most productive pastoral land. Originally tussock and wetlands, the land has been transformed by the hard work of its poineer settlers.
The undisputed Country and Western capital of New Zealand, Gore hosts the prestigious Gold Guitar Awards during the week of Queen's Birthday weekend.
The town of Gore takes its name from the 19th century governor, Thomas Gore Browne. The nearby Hokonui Hills were once famous throughout New Zealand for the country's most potent moonshine. Starting from Dolamore park the Croydon Bush Walkway takes in Whiskey Creek and Whiskey falls, names which go back to the bootlegging era.
Gore is also known for its trout fishing with some 40 trout streams in the vicinity. The trout fishing is renown throughout the world with many tourists holidaying in the region to take in the fishing in the quiet tranquil surroundings.
